Which boxing belt is the most prestigious nowadays?

With the Boxing Championship belt sprouting like mushrooms after the rain, even those who regularly follow Boxing can easily mistake the importance of each belt.

Currently in the boxing industry, there are many championship belts of many different leagues, but only 4 belts of WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF are truly recognized by the whole world.

The reason for the existence of so many different titles is because in the 1920s, a series of British boxing committees created a series of championship titles in order to attract customers for matches.

By 1963, the two largest committees of the time had grown into WBA and WBC – the first two official Boxing federations. 20 years later IBF and WBO were established, since then there are 4 Boxing unions in the world.

Boxing currently has too many world federations/associations

With the existence of 4 different federations/associations, the title of “World Champion” is no longer valid as it used to be. In addition, WBA has made the championship title “lighter” by dividing the championship belt into two categories “regular” and “super”.

What is a “regular” WBA championship title? Put simply, the WBA considers the league to have only one boxer at the top of the weight class is not enough to split the belt into “regular” and “super”.

Initially, the “super” WBA belt was only given to boxers who owned the championship belt in various weight classes as a special title. However, not long after, WBA blatantly created a “super” belt competition for all weight classes. Now every weight class has boxers that own “regular” and “super” belts.

WBA has once confirmed that they are planning to unify “super” and “regular” WBA titles into a championship title to avoid confusion, but this has not yet happened.

The IBO boxing championship belt

On the other hand, the IBO championship belt is one of the most controversial.

The IBO Federation was established in 1988, five years after the introduction of IBF and WBO. For many boxing fans the world-wide 4 leagues is too much and the existence of the 5th federation makes the meaning of the world championship title trivial.

One of the most recent examples of IBO belts not being recognized by the majority of Boxing fans is that after the match between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr, many media outlets around the world chose not to list IBO belts. in the list of titles that Andy Ruiz Jr won.

Joshua accepted to lose a championship title to fight Fury

Anthony Joshua, a boxer who holds three WBA, WBO and IBF championships, wants to fight Tyson Fury in 2020, instead of attending belt battles.

Joshua currently holds three of the four major boxing belts, including WBA Super, IBF and WBO. In 2020, he is supposed to protect the IBF belt against Kubrat Pulev, and the WBO belt against Oleksandr Usyk. If fighting both matches, the goal of fighting Fury this year is unlikely to be realized.

The organization of the All-England match still faces a barrier from Fury, as the boxer may have to fight a third battle with Deontay Wilder, if the American boxer activates this provision within the next month.

In mid-2018, Gennady Golovkin was stripped of the middleweightweight IBF for not agreeing to a title defense match, because he was busy with Canelo Alvarez. Later, Canelo himself was deprived of this IBF belt in mid-2019.

Absolute champions began to be mentioned in the late 1980s, with Mike Tyson among the first champions to acquire the three WBA, WBC and IBF belts in the middle of 1987. By 1988, the WBO was established. It took 20 years for the remaining three organizations to be recognized as one of the four major titles of boxing.

The concept of absolute champion is now understood as a boxer who acquires all four WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts. Around 2004 WBO coined the names unified champion (boxers won two of the four major champions), undisputed champions (won three belts), and super champions (all four belts). However, this division has not been agreed upon by the remaining organizations.

A boxer, if stripped but not due to losing, is still called the absolute champion. In 2000, Lennox Lewis was stripped of the WBA belt for not attending the organization’s title match. However, he was still called the absolute champion until April 2001, when losing to Hasim Rahman.

How is boxing affected by Covid-19 pandemic? (Part 2)

Boxing does not have a tournament, there is no system for ranking players. It operates in a very primitive way. The punches challenge each other, the winner has money to bring back, the loser is empty-handed (although sometimes there are cases where the punch-losing person still has money). “All the fighters need is money, not a health report,” the Independent wrote.

Boxing has up to 4 management agencies including WBA (World Boxing Association), WBC (World Boxing Council), IBF (International Boxing Federation) and WBO (World Boxing Organization). Representatives of these four agencies never accept to sit together to elect a top management and they also do not agree that there will be only one champion.

The existence of WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO is simply making money. The organizers will host their own championship matches to call for sponsors, sell tickets, collect money, and award prizes to the winners. All 4 agencies have their own rules. The only thing they have in common is that they don’t have a long-term management plan. In weight classes, the world will always have 4 champions.

Tris Dixon, editor of Boxing News, wrote: “It never will be possible for these 4 organizations to sit together to come to an agreement. Because simply every organization has its own piece of cake and they are all living well with it so no one will share any one. ”

The fighters themselves have no need to change anything. “The fighters keep fighting, getting money and that’s enough. They don’t need to be a champion of a tournament, because their ultimate goal is always money, ”added British journalist Frank Warren.

Famous handler Amir Khan said that he himself and many other hands do not understand how the management mechanism operates. So whenever they had money, they would go to the floor, and Covid-19 would look after it.
