With the Boxing Championship belt sprouting like mushrooms after the rain, even those who regularly follow Boxing can easily mistake the importance of each belt.
Currently in the boxing industry, there are many championship belts of many different leagues, but only 4 belts of WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF are truly recognized by the whole world.
The reason for the existence of so many different titles is because in the 1920s, a series of British boxing committees created a series of championship titles in order to attract customers for matches.
By 1963, the two largest committees of the time had grown into WBA and WBC – the first two official Boxing federations. 20 years later IBF and WBO were established, since then there are 4 Boxing unions in the world.
Boxing currently has too many world federations/associations
With the existence of 4 different federations/associations, the title of “World Champion” is no longer valid as it used to be. In addition, WBA has made the championship title “lighter” by dividing the championship belt into two categories “regular” and “super”.
What is a “regular” WBA championship title? Put simply, the WBA considers the league to have only one boxer at the top of the weight class is not enough to split the belt into “regular” and “super”.
Initially, the “super” WBA belt was only given to boxers who owned the championship belt in various weight classes as a special title. However, not long after, WBA blatantly created a “super” belt competition for all weight classes. Now every weight class has boxers that own “regular” and “super” belts.
WBA has once confirmed that they are planning to unify “super” and “regular” WBA titles into a championship title to avoid confusion, but this has not yet happened.
The IBO boxing championship belt
On the other hand, the IBO championship belt is one of the most controversial.
The IBO Federation was established in 1988, five years after the introduction of IBF and WBO. For many boxing fans the world-wide 4 leagues is too much and the existence of the 5th federation makes the meaning of the world championship title trivial.
One of the most recent examples of IBO belts not being recognized by the majority of Boxing fans is that after the match between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr, many media outlets around the world chose not to list IBO belts. in the list of titles that Andy Ruiz Jr won.
